The Timeball is linked by signal to Greenwich and will rise at 12.55 and fall at 13:00. Timeballs were a predecessor of the pips and used to accurately set clocks and wristwatches, they were also used by shipping. The Prestons Timeball is one of only two working Timeballs in the country and was manufactured by Peter Dooley Design Limited.
